Lisa Verzino Honored as Athlete of the week
Posted on May 14th, 2009New York University freshman Lisa Verzino was honored as a University Athletic Association (UAA) co-Women’s Fencing Athlete of the Week on Feb. 2, for the first time in her NYU career.
Over the weekend, Verzino competed in two events for the Violets. She first went 2-1 in a duel meet against Tufts University on Saturday, and then went on to be NYU’s top performer in the Eric Sollee Invitational at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
At MIT, Verzino went 15-6 overall, including three 3-0 marks against Brandeis University, MIT and Princeton University. Princeton is currently ranked #7 in the U.S. College Fencing Coaches Poll.
Verzino is tied for the most overall victories on the fencing team this season, compiling a record of 32-21 in duel-meet competition.
Verzino and the other members of the NYU women’s fencing team will be back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 11 when they host Vassar College, Sacred Heart University and Columbia University.
